Minotauri - II
Minotauri basically was an outlet for Ari Honkonen from the band Morningstar, it was an opportunity for him to play some slower music. The band gradually took the shape of a full band, and numerous splits and 7 and 10 inches were released on a small scale. This, however, is the band’s last release, having split up due to numerous reasons. Let’s see if this is a loss for the Finnish doom scene.
Well Minotauri came into existence in 1995, and they operate in the heavy metal-like doom metal area. Think of acts like Trouble and perhaps Candlemass, not the type of doom I’m all too fond of. To be honest it took me quite some time to even like anything at all about this band. But the more I listened to it, the more I noticed things that were quite alright. Basically the music is pretty much ok, nothing groundbreaking but some nice old-school heavy riffing and bashing. Unfortunately mediocrity still seeps through the songs, especially in the vocals. So when I’ve heard this album about three times, I do not feel keen on playing it ever again to be honest.
Well the album contains three bonus tracks for the true fans (who are probably only to be found in their home country I suspect), two of them are from a 7 inch single and the other is from a 7 inch split single with their tour-buddies Reverend Bizarre. I guess fans of heavy metal doom should check this out, but I don’t think the average modern doom lover will be easily pleased with this one. A last release for the fans, not for the world I’d say.
